Workshop Overview
A free 3-hour (one day workshop) practical legal clinic designed for artists understand the practical fundamental elements of copyright & entertainment legal aspects to help artist protect their creative rights. Participants will gain foundational knowledge of copyright, contracts, and entertainment law essentials, with real-world examples and guided exercises tailored to the performing and visual arts industries.

Hour 1: Foundations of Copyright & Creative Ownership
- What is copyright? Duration, scope, and automatic protection
- Copyright vs. trademark vs. patent
- Who owns the work? Individual vs. collaborative creation
- Case study: Copyright disputes in music, theatre, and visual arts
- Interactive exercise: Identifying copyrightable elements in participants’ work
Hour 2: Contracts, Licensing & Fair Use
- Key clauses in artist and performance contracts
- Understanding licensing agreements and royalties
- Fair use and transformative works
- Work-for-hire and joint authorship explained
- Group activity: Reviewing a sample artist contract
Hour 3: Legal Tools, Resources & Q&A Clinic
- Registering copyrights and trademarks

- Navigating permissions and releases
- Overview of pro bono and nonprofit legal aid for artists
