About the Workshop

The Summer Youth Playwriting is a free 10-day program designed for young writers ages 14–19 who want to discover their voice through theater. No prior playwriting experience is necessary — just a love for stories and a willingness to create.

Led by professional teaching artist Elena Vasquez, this workshop takes students from blank page to staged reading. Each day includes warm-ups, writing exercises, peer feedback, and one-on-one mentorship. By the end of the intensive, every participant will complete an original 5–10 minute play.

What Students Will Learn

  • Structure of a one-act play
  • Creating authentic dialogue
  • Building compelling characters
  • Giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • Preparing a short play for performance

  • Daily snacks and lunch
  • Metrocard transportation stipend (up to $40 per student)
  • Certificate of completion
  • Two complimentary tickets for family members to the final showcase

Eligibility & Requirements

  • Ages 14–19 as of July 7, 2026
  • Resident of any New York City borough
  • A short writing sample (1 page max) or a brief statement of interest submitted with registration
